NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Milton Glaser, an icon in contemporary graphic design and illustration, has been honored for lifetime achievement by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.

Glaser, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award given annually by the museum, was cited for his advertisement designs, poster, portraits over the past half century, and especially for his iconic logos such as the album cover for Bob Dylan's "Greatest Hits" and the "I Love New York" logo. He was described as an influential master of communication and a humanistic force for social change.

The architectural award was shared by Polshek Partnership Architects of New York, whose most recently completed commission was the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark., and Rick Joy, an architect active in the Southwest cited for "timeless qualities associated with great architects."

Other awards went to Yeohlee Teng of New York for fashion design, Yves Behar of San Francisco for product design, William McDonough and Partners of Charlottesville, Va., for environmental design, Jon Kamen and his global firm, @radical.media, for communications design, and Aveda Corp. of Minneapolis for corporate achievement.

Amanda Burden, chairwoman of the New York City Planning Commission, was named design patron of the year for her work as a city planner and activist.
