'Precinct 13' remake shoots in Canada

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- A remake of 1976 cult classic "Assault on Precinct 13" paints Detroit as a crime-ridden, violent city -- but the film was shot entirely in Toronto.

The Detroit skyline in the new film that stars Laurence Fishburne and Ethan Hawke is the only real shot of Motor City, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

The film, originally scheduled to shoot in Los Angeles, was moved to Toronto to obtain a more storm-bound, stark effect, said a representative for Rogue Pictures.

Filmmakers also receives substantial tax breaks in Canada.

The original movie, set in Los Angeles, earned cult status for its violence and portrayal a brutal society.
