Costumes for Santa Claus Parade a big deal

TOTONTO, Ontario, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Cold weather will not be a problem for the 1,500 people dressed in costumes for Toronto's Santa Claus Parade Sunday.

"Our costumes are all lined, at least two layers, for durability," Martha E. Miller, the parade's six-year costume supervisor, told the Toronto Sun Saturday.

Costumes for the more than 100-year-old parade are a big deal, according to Lee-Att Dry, a Seneca College arts and design graduate.

As a child, watching the parade, she said she was impressed by how detailed the costumes were.

"They weren't these skimpy little things," she said. "They were fully accessorized."

Like other parts of parade planning, costuming is a year-round job.

From initial sketches -- and consultation with Mrs. Claus -- the design staff produce a prototype of the costume.

Once all the changes are ironed out, they produce 11 more, of the costumes, according to Miller. "Twelve is the number that looks great on the street, in two rows of six."
