Springsteen signs up for flood aid concert

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Bruce Springsteen has joined the line up of a concert to assist Pittsburgh area victims of September floods from Hurricane Ivan.

Pittsburgh rock musician Joe Grushecky and Allegheny County, Pa., officials announced details Thursday of the Dec. 2 benefit, dubbed Flood Aid, at Heinz Hall, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday.

Springsteen became involved with the event after Grushecky, who played with The Boss at a benefit concert Nov. 7 in Asbury Park, N.J., heard about the flood devastation.

"He said, 'I'll do whatever it takes to help you,'" Grushecky said of his conversation with Springsteen.

Proceeds from the event, expected to exceed $200,000, will be donated to the Salvation Army.

More than 10,000 homes, 1,100 businesses, 400 public buildings and 10 volunteer fire departments were damaged Sept. 17 when heavy rains from Hurricane Ivan poured down on the area.
