NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Actor Vin Diesel says he was happy with the theatrical version of "The Chronicles of Riddick," but even more pleased with the new DVD director's cut.

"I was excited about the idea of adding other story elements that we weren't able to incorporate into the theatrical experience," the star and producer told reporters in New York recently, noting the extra scenes flesh out the enigmatic hero he plays, giving him a "sense of origin."

"I think what we're finding is that the DVD medium is kind of defining itself as a separate medium," Diesel explained.

"Unlike the VHS copies of movies we used to get, which were just kind of an opportunity to see the movie at home, the DVD experience is an opportunity to fully explore 'The Chronicles of Riddick' universe and (DVDs) usually (offer) an opportunity to go behind the scenes in an interesting way and the director usually gets to tell the full story and not be limited to running times."
