ROME, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The Italian-based Gorbachev Foundation named entertainer Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, winner of its annual "Man of Peace Award."
The award comes two months after American customs officials invoked security concerns to block Islam from returning to the United States.
A spokesman for the foundation said it had decided to honor Stevens for his Small Kindness organization that works to "alleviate the suffering of thousands of children and their parents in countries at war." The award ceremony opened the Fifth World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates at Rome's City Hall.
Stevens, who converted to Islam and changed his name in 1977, was known for folk songs such as "Wild World." Since his conversion he has released mostly Muslim-themed albums including the popular "A is for Allah."
"The Man of Peace Award" is given to entertainers and cultural personalities committed to peace. Last year's recipient was Italian film star Roberto Begnini for his movie "Life is Beautiful."
