WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Andrew Carroll was named editor of a National Endowment for the Arts' anthology of present day war stories and reflections on war.
A spokesman for the endowment said the anthology, to be titled "Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience," will preserve firsthand experiences from the battlegrounds of Iraq and Afghanistan. It is scheduled for publication in 2006. Carroll, director of the Legacy Project and for them edited a similar anthology, "War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence From American Wars." The Legacy Project is a national initiative that seeks to preserve wartime correspondence before such letters are lost or destroyed.
The endowment will hold 20 writing workshops at military bases with such writers as Richard Bausch, Tom Clancy, Jeff Shaara, and Tobias Wolff taking part. These workshops will encourage members of the armed forces to record their perspectives on war, combat, and life in the military. Carroll was quoted as saying the fighting men "are the most authentic and insightful voices we have on these subjects."
