SUFFOLK, England, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Entertainers Elton John, the Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and The White Stripes were among mourners attending the funeral of legendary British disc jockey John Peel.
John left a wreath of yellow roses at Friday's ceremony in Suffolk, England, with thousands of others from around the world on hand offering condolences for the rock radio pioneer, who died Oct. 26 from a heart attack while vacationing in Peru, BBC reported.
Peel, 65 at the time of his death, is credited as a champion for up-and-coming acts, with the reputation of giving a chance to bands with new and different sounds.
"You broke more artists then any broadcaster in this history of radio. Every artist once needed a John Peel -- some of the people who paid tributes to you were Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin and Elton John," said fellow BBC disc jockey Paul Gambaccini.
The message accompanying John's wreath read: "Thank you for all the great music. You were a hero for so many. Much love, Elton."
