Wal-Mart cuts DVD rental price

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Wal-Mart.com has cut the monthly subscription price of its DVD rental service plan, Daily Variety said Wednesday.

Wal-Mart will charge $17.36 per month to rent three movies at a time -- down from $18.76. The price is less than that charged by Netflix and Blockbuster.

Netflix announced last month it was lowering its fee from $21.99 to $17.99, effective this week. Variety said the price cut was intended to round up subscribers in anticipation of Amazon.com's entry into the online rental market -- and Blockbuster immediately announced it was cutting the price for its three-movies-out plan to $17.49.

Wal-Mart did not officially announce its plan, but a spokesman told Variety's sister publication, DVD Exclusive, about the price cut just before the market closed Tuesday. The price cut applies only on the three-movie-out plan -- all other plans will remain at current prices.
