Defense setback in Robert Blake's trial

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The judge in the Los Angeles trial of actor Robert Blake has ruled out a defense strategy suggesting another man killed Blake's wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley.

"Entertainment Tonight" reports Blake's lawyers hoped to suggest to the jury that Christian Brando, son of Marlon Brando, shot Bakley as she waited for her husband outside a restaurant. But the judge dismissed that as simple speculation.

The defense had already lost a bid to use a recorded telephone call in which Brando told Bakley she was lucky someone did not kill her. Brando, who served a prison term for killing his sister's fiance, at one time thought he was the father of Bakley's daughter, but the baby turned out to be Blake's.

Blake's trial is expected to last at least four months. He told police he discovered Bakley immediately after the shooting.
