ATTICA, N.Y., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Mark David Chapman, convicted in the 1980 shooting death of John Lennon, told New York parole officials he shot the ex-Beatle to "steal John Lennon's fame."
Chapman's comments, made public Thursday, came during last week's parole hearing in which he was denied release from an Attica, N.Y., prison, the New York Daily News reported Friday.
"I committed this act for attention ... to, in a sense, steal John Lennon's fame and put it on myself, thinking I was nobody at the time. ... In some ways, I'm a bigger nobody than I was before because, you know. People hate me," Chapman said.
Chapman did not ask to be released during the hearing.
"I deserve nothing. Because of the pain and suffering I caused, I deserve exactly what I've gotten," he said.
Chapman, who is held at a maximum security prison, will again be eligible for parole in two years.
