'West Wing' presidential race up for grabs

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- No decision has been made about whether Alan Alda or Jimmy Smits wins the fictitious presidential race on NBC's "West Wing," the series' producer said.

The new season, which kicks off Wednesday, will closely follow the race, but viewers may have to wait until next season to learn if Smits' Democratic character, Matt Santos, or Alda's Republican one, Arnold Vinick, takes the TV White House, New York Daily News reported Thursday.

The third potential candidate is the current vice president, played by Gary Cole.

"We'll follow the Santos campaign, we'll follow the Vinick campaign. It's an area we haven't done on 'The West Wing,'" said John Wells, the drama's executive producer.

Smits and Alda reportedly signed contracts extending beyond "West Wing's" current season.
