Actor Ed Harris to direct a Broadway show

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Popular film star Ed Harris will make his debut as a Broadway director early next year for a revival of Sam Shepard's drama, "Fool for Love."

Todd Haimes, director of the Roundabout Theater Company which made the announcement, noted that Harris, 53, cut his teeth as a director with the film "Pollock" in which he also starred in the role of abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock in 2000.

Haimes suggested that Harris try directing a play but the deal wasn't closed until Harris consulted with Shepard, who was first associated with Harris when he played in the role of Eddie in the off-Broadway premiere of "Fool for Love" in 1983. Since then Harris and Shepard played astronauts in the film "The Right Stuff" and Harris appeared in an off-Broadway production of Shepard's play "Simpatico."

"I talked to Sam and figured what the heck," Harris was quoted as saying. "Let's get a great cast and whale on it."

The cast for the revival at the American Airline Theater on Feb. 10 has not yet been announced. Rehearsals begin Dec. 12.
