PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The members of R.E.M. are concerned that their participation in the Vote For Change tour may alienate some people from their new album.

"It's certainly possible," says guitarist Peter Buck. "I don't see a whole lot of upside on it. You kind of assume that's going to have some affect. And I know that we're probably gonna alienate 50 percent of the overall audience, if not 50 percent of ours."

The Vote For Change tour, whose stated purpose is encouraging audiences to vote President George Bush out of office, began in earnest on Friday in Pennsylvania and will hit 11 swing states, concluding Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C. Nineteen acts are taking part in the tour.

R.E.M., which is playing Vote For Change dates with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, John Fogerty and Bright Eyes, releases its album "Around the Sun" next Tuesday.

The tour is produced by the MoveOn Political Action Committee, with proceeds benefiting America Coming Together.
