Nigel Aylott dies in 'Primal Quest' race

HELENA PEAK, Wash., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Australian adventurer Nigel Aylott was killed in an accident during the "Subaru Primal Quest" being filmed for CBS Sports, it was reported Monday.

Ayott and his team were competing Wednesday in the hiking portion of the 10-day, 400-mile race, when a rock slide on Helena Peak in Washington state occurred and a 300-pound boulder struck him in the head, killing him, Zap2it.com reported Monday.

"There is no way to overstate how shattered we feel," said Maria Burton, the race's co-director. "Nigel was not only an elite backcountry athlete, he was a great spirit. Everyone here is trying to get through this as best they can."

The "Primal Quest" race, which has teams compete for a $250,000 prize, was held up for several hours after Aylott's death and after consulting with his family and teammates, re-started Thursday.
