Britney not legally married

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Pop star Britney Spears' surprise weekend wedding in California is not yet legal because all of the paperwork reportedly has yet to be filed.

Spears and fiance Kevin Federline married Saturday in a Studio City, Calif., ceremony so hush-hush the singer's mom and attendants did not even know it was happening, but the couple failed to file the requisite legal forms, CBS said.

"A lot was complicated because they moved up the date and next week, they're going to file all of the paperwork," said Jess Cagle, People magazine senior editor and contributor to CBS' "The Early Show."

A widely publicized October wedding reportedly had been planned, but Spears' pulled off last weekend's nuptials with about 20 family members in attendance.

"The mother, the sister, the father. They showed up at the house. It was not an engagement party that they had been invited to, but a wedding," Cagle said.

Federline's daughter, who was to be a flower girl, reportedly even missed the ceremony because she was spending the day at Disneyland.
