Emmy telecast bathroom humor

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Sunday night's Emmys telecast featured a sketch set in a restroom, but it wasn't the one writers originally planned, Daily Variety said Tuesday.

The telecast featured host Garry Shandling and actor Ray Romano standing at adjacent urinals, talking about reality TV. The payoff had comedian Chris Rock joking about the name of Emmy winner Elaine Stritch.

Variety said that sketch was a substitute for one involving Viacom chief Leslie Moonves, Disney executive Robert Iger and Fox programming head Gail Berman.

During the telecast, Shandling talked about cashing in on the reality craze with an idea for a show called "What's Outside Garry's Front Door?"

The sketch viewers never saw had Shandling standing at a urinal, flanked by Moonves and Iger, who like the pitch and start haggling for the rights. Just then, Berman burts into the men's room and says she has beaten them to the air with a copycat show -- "What's Outside Bernie Mac's Front Door."

Variety said the sketch was left out of the live telecast because it was considered unseemly -- and because, some said, it just wasn't funny.
