'Angels' dominates at 56th Emmys

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- "Angels in America" won seven Emmys, including Outstanding Miniseries, at the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.

HBO's adaptation of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about AIDS in America during the 1980s won 11 Emmys overall this year -- including four at recent creative and technical award ceremonies held by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

On Sunday, Kushner won a writing Emmy for his adaptation and Mike Nichols won a directing Emmy. Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeffrey Wright won acting Emmys.

"Angels in America" led HBO to a big night at the Emmys, which were handed out at the Shrine Auditorium. The premium cable channel collected 16 Emmys Sunday -- more than all the other networks combined.

Fox took home three Emmys Sunday, all for its offbeat comedy "Arrested Development," which won for Outstanding Comedy Series as well as comedy writing and directing.

NBC also won three Emmys. Allison Janney won for actress on a drama series for "The West Wing," and Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce won acting Emmys for the final season of "Frasier."

CBS was shut out at Sunday's ceremony.
