LICHFIELD, England, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- British playwright Dale Wasserman saved the day for an amateur production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in Lichfield, England.
The Staffordshire-based amateur drama group had been rehearsing the play when it was told it had to abandon the show because of copyright laws, the BBC reported Sunday.
The group's application was rejected because it might have interfered with a London production of the play, starring U.S. actor Christian Slater.
"I was completely horrified when I found out, because we were into rehearsals big time," said Paula Dumolo the amateur group's director. "We had booked the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield, tickets had gone on sale and advertising was just about to go out." Dumolo e-mailed a plea to Wasserman and, in a quick return e-mail, the playwright gave the group the performing rights to his script.
