Kennedy honors Elton John, Warren Beatty

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Entertainer Elton John, actor Warren Beatty, composer John Williams and soprano Dame Joan Sutherland are among the artists tapped for Kennedy Center Honors.

Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, actors/producers who have been married for 56 years, also were named to the illustrious list Wednesday, with the awards to be handed out Dec. 4 at a State Department dinner. A White House reception and celebrity salute at the Kennedy Center will be held Dec. 5, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

"They are a film artist whose talents are astonishingly diverse; a greatly revered couple of stage and screen; a pop music icon who also composes stunning musical film and theater scores; an operatic superstar of unsurpassed artistic achievement; and one of the most influential American composers of the past four decades," said Stephen A. Schwarzman, the center's chairman.

The Kennedy Center Honors recognize individuals who have made lasting contributions to the arts and a lasting impact on the cultural life of the United States.
