'Chipmunks' headed for big screen

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Plans are under way in Hollywood for a feature film based on the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" cartoons, Daily Variety said Wednesday.

The paper said Fox 2000 Pictures, 20th Century Fox Animation and Bagdasarian Productions will collaborate on the project, which will feature a blend of live-action and computer generated images.

No writer or director has been announced yet. The studio said a live actor will play David Seville, the character invented by Chipmunks creator Ross Bagdasarian, who was something of a father figure to the three Chipmunks -- Simon, Theodore and Alvin.

Bagdasarian -- who died of a heart attack at 52 in 1972 -- struck gold with "The Chipmunk Song" in 1958, selling 4.5 million records in seven weeks. Since then, the Chipmunks have been featured in other recordings, an animated prime time TV series, several prime time specials and Saturday morning cartoons.
