SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Pop singer Marianne Faithfull, who stars in William S. Burroughs' musical "The Black Rider," said her friendship with the writer gives her part more soul.
Faithfull, 57, plays Pegleg, the androgynous devil character who makes a deal with Wilhelm, played by Matt McGrath, in the musical fable running Wednesday through Oct. 3 at San Francisco's Geary Theater, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Robert Wilson directs the production, with music and lyrics by Tom Waits.
"I was so pleased to get the job. I wanted to work with Robert Wilson and I love the music of Tom Waits. But what I really wanted was to try and interpret William Burroughs' text -- because I knew him, and I could give my devil more soul," Faithfull said.
Burroughs, author of "Naked Lunch" and "Junky," and Faithfull first met when the singer was 18. When the two became reacquainted in the 1980s, a friendship formed that lasted until the author died in 1997.
"He liked my songs and he liked the way I did them. There must've been a vibe about me that he liked," Faithfull said.
