LONDON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- British actor Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, studied gorillas in Rwanda to prepare for his next role in "King Kong."

Serkis, 40, will play the title character in the upcoming movie filmed in New Zealand by "Rings' director Peter Jackson, Britain's Sun reported Tuesday.

Naomi Watts, who co-stars in "King Kong" with Serkis, Adrien Brody and comic Jack Black, said Serkis' research has helped the entire cast.

"He's extraordinary, the amount of research he's done. He brought back incredible tapes of all that gorilla behavior that we need to get very familiar with," Watts said.
