Dave Matthews Band respond to sewage claim

CHICAGO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The Dave Matthews Band said it cooperated with authorities to resolve allegations its tour bus driver dumped raw sewage onto tourists in the Chicago River.

The band posted a letter to "the people of Chicago and fans" at its Web site to "resolve any misunderstandings" about the early August incident in which police say about 800 pounds of waste were dumped from one of the band's buses as it passed over a grated bridge on the Chicago River, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan filed a civil lawsuit, identifying Stefan Wohl, a band bus driver, as the person who dumped the sewage. The suit seeks $70,000 in fines.

Police reportedly have videotape showing one of the buses as it passed over the river.

About two-thirds of 120 passengers on a tourist boat were splashed with the sewage.

"If we were responsible for what happened, we will work quickly to make amends, with the people on the boat and with Chicago," the letter said.

Band members have offered DNA samples in an effort to resolve the matter.
