U.S. gamers using mobile phones

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. gaming trends are changing, with the number of gamers using mobile phones for entertainment doubling in the past year, a survey says.

Approximately 16.3 million households now use mobile phones for gaming, twice as many as in 2003, a Digital Gaming In America report found, the BBC reported Friday.

The poll of 1,000 Americans also found of the 70 percent of gamers who own a mobile phone, 50 percent use them for gaming and spent an average $19 buying mobile games during the past two months.

Nokia has its N-Gage and N-Gage QD handheld devices on the market, with the Gizmondo due out in the next year.

Sony's PSP is expected to be released in Japan by the end of the year, with the Nintendo DS headed for stores in Japan and the United States by the end of the year.

More than 100 million mobile gamers are expected by 2006, the BBC said.
