Whoopi returns to Broadway 20 years later

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Whoopi Goldberg, who first gained fame 20 years ago for her self-titled, one-woman Broadway show, is returning in a revival of the comedy.

Goldberg will open the show Oct. 12 in Philadelphia before moving to New York's Lyceum Theater Nov. 6, where the show originally opened in the mid-1980s, the New York Times reported Thursday.

The show will change little from its first incarnation, said Leonard Soloway, one of the producers.

"The first time show was an introduction to Whoopi, but now that we know her, it will bring something totally new to the audience's experience," Soloway said.

One difference is the show's title, shortened from "Whoopi Goldberg" to just "Whoopi."

"Whoopi" enters a Broadway season with a large selection of solo shows, including Billy Crystal's "700 Sundays" an as-yet-untitled Martin Short project, Eve Ensler's "Good Body," "Dame Edna: Back With a Vengeance" and Mario Cantone's "Laugh Whore."
