Director Daniel Petrie Sr. dies at 83

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Emmy-winning director Daniel Petrie Sr. has died at his home in Los Angeles of cancer at age 83, it was reported Monday.

Petrie was surrounded by his family, including his wife of 57 years, Dorothea Petrie. Their son, writer-director Daniel Petrie Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter the elder Petrie explored difficult subjects, often ahead of his time.

"There's a common thread in all of his work of a real concern for the human condition," said Petrie Jr.

Petrie Sr. won directing Emmys in 1976 for the ABC Theatre production of "Eleanor and Franklin," and in 1977 for "Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years." He also won a producing Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program in 1992 for "Mark Twain and Me."

In a career that began with "Studio One" in 1948, Petrie Sr. directed such memorable TV projects as "The Dollmaker," "Sybil" and "Inherit the Wind." His feature film credits included "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Fort Apache the Bronx."
