CUPERTINO, Calif., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Fans of the Apple iPod digital music player now have more than 1 million songs to choose from as downloads from the iTunes Music Store, Apple Computer said.
California-based Apple is the first online music service to have a catalog of more than 1 million individual songs in the United States. The iTunes Music Store is the most successful of the many online music sites with 70 percent of the market for legally downloaded music.
Consumers have downloaded more than 100 million songs since the pioneering store was created as an Apple-only music service in April 2003 offering about 200,000 songs in its catalog. It expanded to Windows PCs and the United Kingdom, France and Germany as sales of the popular iPod music player took off worldwide.
"The iTunes Music Store offers the world's most extensive collection of downloadable music with over 1 million tracks available," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Applications.
