Chickenpox halts Slater's U.K. stage debut

LONDON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Christian Slater has come down with the chickenpox, delaying the Hollywood actor's British stage debut in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

Doctor's orders for Slater to rest have resulted in the postponement of the show's scheduled opening Friday at annual arts festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, the BBC reported Wednesday.

"We so hoped we would be able to make the first performance but poor Christian's chickenpox has simply been too virulent. In order to safeguard the rest of the run we are having to take the doctor's advice to let Christian recover for one more day. (His character) R.P. McMurphy is an enormous part requiring great energy," said producer Nica Burns.

The show is set to run for three weeks at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms before moving to London's Gielgud Theater.
