Emmys will honor Les Paul

LOS ANGELES, July 23 (UPI) -- The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced that legendary guitarist and recording pioneer Les Paul will be honored at the upcoming Emmy Awards.

Paul is credited with developing sound-on-sound, over-dubbing, the electronic reverb effect and multi-track tape recording.

He developed the first eight-track recorder in the late 1940s by stacking eight Ampex tape machines and synchronizing them. The innovation led to videotape recorders and audio consoles, tools that revolutionized the recording and entertainment industries.

Paul will receive the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award at the Primetime Creative Arts ceremony on Sept. 12 at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The academy also announced that Chryon Corp. will receive a Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Emmy for its invention and development of the character generator. Dolby Laboratories will receive an Emmy for The Dolby LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meter.

Sony and Panavision will each receive an Emmy for the first digital 24p imaging system that gives film shot with a viedo camera the appearance of having been shot in 35mm. The innovsation is considered the new standard for the way most multi-camera television shows are now shot.
