R&B legend Ruth Brown returns to stage

NEW YORK, July 20 (UPI) -- R&B legend Ruth Brown has returned to the New York stage.

Brown, 76, is singing at Le Jazz au Bar, a nightclub on 58th Street in Manhattan, her first extended run at a New York club in five years, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

Brown's engagement began last Wednesday and will continue through Aug. 1.

Brown is back in the spotlight after a 2000 stroke left the singer unable to speak and with impaired memory. The singer's speech returned, but her memory did not. She performs seated and reads her lyrics from a book.

Brown's first post-stroke performance was last summer at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass. That performance scared her, as do all of her current ones, she said.

"I didn't know how they would receive me, anywhere ... because the memories they have of me. I used to walk that stage back and forth and dance through the whole thing," she said.
