CBS will fight indecency fines

PASADENA, Calif., July 19 (UPI) -- CBS chairman Leslie Moonves is promising to fight any fines imposed on his company for airing an image of Janet Jackson's bare breast during the Super Bowl.

Federal Communications Commission officials have proposed fining 20 CBS owned-and-operated stations a total of $550,000 for televising Jackson's exposed right breast at the end of the Super Bowl halftime show in February.

Moonves, who was recently named co-president of CBS' parent company, Viacom Inc., told television critics at their annual meeting in Pasadena, Calif., the FCC's get-tough policy on broadcast decency comes "dangerously close" to violating First Amendment guarantees of free expression.

Moonves said it would be ridiculous to fine stations for the incident.

"We're going to take it up to the courts if that happens," he said.
