Celia Cruz memorial in New York

NEW YORK, July 17 (UPI) -- A group of friends and family gathered at the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City for a memorial one year after singer Celia Cruz died.

The Miami Herald reported Saturday Cruz rests in an above-ground crypt in the Bronx cemetery because she wished to be moved to a resting place next to her mother's in Havana, once the government in Cuba changes.

"There was some thought to the fact that she wanted one day to be returned to Cuba," Kevin Mack, general manager of the Frank Campbell Funeral Home in Manhattan, which handled the arrangements for Cruz, told the Herald. "Being above ground will make it easier to move the remains one day."

Friends and family of the Queen of Salsa saw for the first time Friday a new stained glass window in the image of La Caridad del Cobre -- a gift from talk show hostess Cristina Saralegui and her husband Marcos Avila.

The memorial ceremony was brief, in contrast to the funerals last year that drew tens of thousands of people in Miami and Manhattan.
