Guitarist Paco de Lucia wins top prize

MADRID, July 14 (UPI) -- Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia beat out Bruce Springsteen and Andrew Lloyd Webber to win a top arts award in Madrid.

De Lucia was awarded the 2004 Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts Wednesday amid praise for the musician's contributions to the world of music, EFE reported.

De Lucia was born Francisco Sanchez Gomez in 1947 in Algeciras, Cadiz province in Spain.

He achieved international acclaim for his albums "Almoraima," "Siroco" and his most recent, "Cositas Buenas."

Springsteen of the United States, Britain's Webber and French dancer Maurice Bejart were among the finalists for the coveted award.
