'Jeopardy' champ winnings top $1M

LOS ANGELES, July 13 (UPI) -- Software engineer Ken Jennings Tuesday topped the $1 million mark during his 30th appearance on "Jeopardy," winning $32,000 to bring his total to $1,004,960.

Host Alex Trebek wondered how Jennings, from Salt Lake City and a teetotaler, knows so much about alcoholic beverages -- a category that has come up several times and with which Jennings has no trouble.

Jennings said his wife prepared flash cards with the drinks and all their ingredients and drilled him on the information.

"You owe her a big debt of gratitude," Trebek said.

"I'll buy her a drink!" Jennings quipped.

Jennings latest victims were attorney Max Corrick of Las Vegas and insurance agent Irene Lawrence of Palo Alto, Calif. Lawrence won $2,800 on Tuesday's show, but Corrick walked away with nothing.

Jennings went into the final round with $46,000 and wagered $14,000 on the answer: "The first two New York Times headlines set in 96-point type were in these two years, five years apart."

None of the contestants came up with the correct question: "What are 1969 and 1974?" The first refers to the moon landing and the second to the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon.
