Haddon's 'Curious Incident' sells 1m

LONDON, July 9 (UPI) -- British author Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time" has sold 1 million copies in a pace matched only by "Harry Potter" books.

Random House, Haddon's publisher, announced Thursday "The Curious Incident" sold 1 million copies since its June 2003 release in both adult and children's versions, and continues to gain momentum as a top book for the summer, Britain's Independent reported Friday.

"The demand from readers of all backgrounds and all ages has been extraordinary," said Random House's Mike Broderick.

"With the exception of Harry Potter, we believe that this is the first time a book has sold 1 million copies in the adult and children's market so soon after publication," Broderick said.

"The Curious Incident" tells the story of a 15-year-old autistic boy who stumbles upon a neighbor's dead dog and while trying to discover how the dog died, learns about himself.

Haddon, 41, is a veteran author of 15 books, including 1987's "Gilbert's Gobstoppers."

The paperback version was released in May.
