Film to depict deeds of German cannibal

FRANKFURT, Germany, July 6 (UPI) -- A German film producer has received public funding to make a movie about a cannibal who killed and ate a man who volunteered for the experience.

Armin Meiwes, a middle-aged computer expert, was jailed only a few months ago for killing and eating a man after posting an advertisement on the Internet asking for a willing victim.

Now Rosa von Praunheim, among Germany's most controversial homosexual directors, has received $23,400 of public money to make a film about Meiwes, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Von Praunheim has gained notoriety for producing films that blend homosexuality, politics provocative and social comment.

Von Praunheim said he has been interested in the subject of cannibalism for 20 years, and has made one film on the subject, "May I be Your Bratwurst, Please?"

Many Germans are angry the tax-payer funded North Rhine-Westphalia Film Institute is funding his work, the BBC said.
