"This is not only the best film of the festival, but it is one of the best I have seen lately. Russian filmmakers should be proud of this man," said Alan Parker, British director and head of the jury at the festival.

The film is a bleak depiction of the German invasion, the Moscow Times said.

U.S. actress Meryl Streep received a lifetime achievement award for dedication to the Stanislavsky method of acting. The award was given to the Oscar-winning actress by Alex Prior, the 11-year-old great-grandson of Konstantin Stanislavsky.
