LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- Plans are under way in Hollywood for a remake of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," Daily Variety said Friday.
Fox 2000 is developing the project, with a screenplay by Justin Haythe, who wrote the upcoming Robert Redford-Helen Mirren movie, "The Clearing."
"Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" was one of a string of fantasy-disaster epics turned out by Irwin Allen -- whose credits also included "The Poseidon Adventure," "The Towering Inferno" and the TV series "Lost in Space." "Voyage" -- starring Walter Pidgeon and Joan Fontaine -- was also made into a TV series in 1964 starring Richard Basehart and David Hedison.
Variety said Haythe's story will have the world's most advanced submarine dispatched on a deep-sea salvage mission when it inadvertently takes on a predatory creature from the ocean floor.
