Presidio marked as home to Disney museum

SAN FRANCISCO, June 21 (UPI) -- San Francisco's Presidio military post has been chosen as the site for a museum to honor the life of Walt Disney.

Disney's heirs are in negotiations to restore a 100-year-old Army barracks into a permanent showcase about the life and art of the man who created Mickey Mouse and the Walt Disney Co. empire, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday.

The proposed site, part of the 1480-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area, will need approximately $20 million for structural repairs and other renovations before becoming museum-ready.

The Disney family has been gathering items for the shrine during the past three or four years at a nearby storage facility where photos, letters and other Disney mementos are stored, the Chronicle said.

The family chose the Presidio, which served as military post from 1776 to 1994, because they "liked the idea of it being on a former military base," a Presidio source said, explaining Disney was a patriotic man.
