BBC launching in Italy

ROME, June 21 (UPI) -- The pope may have the chance to view BBC's soaps, such as "EastEnders" and "The Vicar of Dibley," when the British broadcaster launches programming in Italy.

The BBC has signed a deal to begin broadcasting BBC Prime to 2.6 million households throughout Italy and Vatican City in August, Britain's Daily Mail reported Monday.

The channel, part of BBC Worldwide, also will air the makeover show "What Not To Wear," "Fawlty Towers," "Teletubbies," "Spooks," "Absolutely Fabulous" and others.

"We will be broadcasting in the Vatican for the first time and we hope all of our shows provide excellent entertainment," a BBC spokesman said.

Italy is the latest country to receive BBC Prime, which reaches 15 million homes throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
