'Legally Blonde' headed for Broadway

LOS ANGELES, June 10 (UPI) -- Plans are under way to adapt the hit movie "Legally Blonde" for a Broadway musical, Daily Variety reported Thursday.

MGM on Stage licensed the Reese Witherspoon comedy last year for development as a stage musical to Hal Luftig, Fox Theatricals and Dori Berinstein, who previously collaborated on "Thoroughly Modern Millie."

Variety said "Freaky Friday" screenwriter Heather Hach will write the book for the musical, making her Broadway debut as writer.

Larry O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, whose credits include the musical "Sarah, Plain and Tall," will collaborate on the music and lyrics for "Legally Blonde" on Broadway.

Luftig told Variety the producers expect to have the musical ready for a full reading in 2005, but there was no mention of a target date for opening night.
