Britain's pay TV BSkyB offering freebies

LONDON, June 9 (UPI) -- BSkyB, Britain's pay TV service, is set to offer 200 free channels in a move to compete with Freeview, BBC's no-fee 30-channel service.

For the first time since its launch 10 years ago, BSkyB is reaching out to TV viewers who have refused satellite and subscription TV services, Britain's Guardian reported Wednesday.

For approximately $250 -- the cost to install a satellite dish and receiver -- British viewers will have access to five terrestrial channels and other networks, such as BBC3, BBC4, ITV, CNN and Extreme Sports, without paying a subscription fee.

Freeview, which offers 30 channels for a one-time fee of approximately $140, is currently in 3.5 million homes, the Guardian said, with its growth outpacing pay TV.
