'Fuddy Meers' closes after short run

LONDON, June 8 (UPI) -- "Fuddy Meers," the successful Broadway black comedy from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, is ending its London run only two weeks after opening.

"Fuddy Meers" will shut down Saturday at West End's Arts Theater, almost three months before its scheduled close at the end of August, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Mendes' comedy opened May 25 in London to weak reviews despite its popular run on Broadway.

The London Evening Standard said the "heavy-handed production revels in futility and silliness", while The Times of London said the comedy was "a strenuously acted disappointment."

Reviewer Charles Spencer wrote in the Daily Telegraph that the black comedy was "the kind of stuff of which nasty headaches are made."

The play, written by David Lindsay-Abaire, features 24 hours in the life of Claire, played by Katie Finneran, who is an amnesiac trying to make sense of her world.

Mendes, 38, won a best director Oscar in 2000 for "American Beauty," starring Kevin Spacey.
