Gibson Guitars stays busy in the courts

NASHVILLE, June 7 (UPI) -- Nashville's Gibson Guitar, maker of the noted Les Paul guitar, is preparing for one of its more legally busy summers, the Tennessean said Monday.

Late last month, Gibson filed suit in Tennessee against Japanese guitar maker Tokai over its "Love Rock" guitar, which Gibson says is a Les Paul look-alike.

The suit also names as defendants alleged retailers like New Jersey-based Godlyke Distributing Inc., The Guitar Cellar of Lexington, Ky., and Musictoyz.com of Maine.

Meanwhile, Gibson's long-running legal battle with Paul Reed Smith continues in federal court. Gibson sued because of its Singlecut model, a guitar Paul Reed Smith says it produced for dealers who loved the Les Paul but despise Gibson.

Although a federal judge granted summary judgment to Gibson earlier this year, Paul Reed Smith has indicated it might appeal, and the case is headed for a July trial to determine damages.
