AFI to honor 'Monster' director

LOS ANGELES, June 7 (UPI) -- The American Film Institute announced Monday it will honor "Monster" writer-director Patty Jenkins with the 2004 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal.

The award is named for the director of such Hollywood classics as "Patton" and "Planet of the Apes." It is presented each year to recognize "the extraordinary creative talents of a graduate of the AFI Conservatory or of the Directing Workshop for Women who symbolizes the legacy of Franklin Schaffner."
