McCartney raps Iraq war

LISBON, Portugal, May 28 (UPI) -- Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, speaking in Portugal, said Britain acted hastily with the United States in going into Iraq, making the situation difficult.

"Maybe our government went in too fast with the Americans. It would have been better if the U.N. had been together. Now it's become very bloody with Iraq," the 61-year-old singer told the weekly Portuguese magazine Visao.

The singer, who is currently touring Europe, opened the Rock in Rio music festival in Lisbon Friday, the BBC reported.

Sir Paul said the countries needed to act after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"To look for (al-Qaida leader Osama) Bin Laden seemed reasonable to go against terrorism, but the war has become very difficult," he said.

The Rock in Rio festival is based on an annual Brazilian festival, which has been running since 1985.

Britney Spears and Peter Gabriel are among the more than 70 performers taking part in the event.
