David Beckham nets Gillette sponsorship

LONDON, May 28 (UPI) -- British soccer star David Beckham reportedly has signed his most lucrative sponsorship to-date, a four-year contract with razor company Gillette.

The Boston company announced its deal with Beckham Thursday, with the advertising campaign featuring the Real Madrid player beginning in June for the global launch of a battery-powered razor, Times of London reported Friday.

"Gillette is known as 'The Best A Man Can Get' and David Beckham is seen by millions as the best a man can be. He is an established icon and one of the world's best and most recognizable sports figures," said Peter Hoffman, president of blades and razors at Gillette.

Sources said Beckham, the highest paid soccer player in the world, will earn $70 million for his Gillette endorsement, an amount Michelle Szynal, a spokeswoman for Gillette, said was ridiculous, the Times said.

Beckman is no stranger to endorsements. Contracts with Adidas, Vodafone, Brylcreem, Police sunglasses, Pepsi and Marks & Spencer reportedly have earned the soccer star $11.8 million.
