LONDON, May 25 (UPI) -- British pop singer-turned-actress Billie Piper has been chosen to play Dr. Who's assistant in the newest incarnation of the popular British series.

Piper was selected Monday for the role of Rose Tyler opposite actor Christopher Eccleston's Dr. Who, Britain's Sun reported Tuesday.

"I am absolutely thrilled," Piper said about her new role.

The 21-year-old actress impressed BBC casting executives with her recent roles, particularly when she played a young wife who cheated on her elderly husband in BBC1's "Canterbury Tales: The Miller's Tale," the Sun said.

"Billie is beautiful, funny and intelligent. She will make an extraordinary Rose Tyler," said Julie Gardner, head of drama for BBC Wales.

The actress will star with Orlando Bloom in "The Calcium Kid," with filming set to begin later this year in Cardiff, England.
