Noted R&B musician murdered in Philly

PHILADELPHIA, May 12 (UPI) -- Philadelphia musician John Whitehead, who co-wrote "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," has been killed, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

Police said Whitehead, 55, was gunned down Tuesday evening as he and a friend, Ohmed Johnson, worked on one of the musician's sport utility vehicles. Johnson was in critical condition at a local hospital Wednesday.

The pair were shot by two men firing 9mm pistorls. No suspects have been arrested.

"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," which Whitehead co-wrote with Gene McFadden, hit No. 1 on the R&B charts in 1979 and peaked at No. 13 on the pop list. The song became an unofficial anthem for the Phillies as they won the World Series in 1980 and the Eagles as they reached the Super Bowl in 1981.

McFadden was one of dozens of friends and relatives who came to the Whitehead house as news of the killing spread. With tears in his eyes, he said he couldn't talk.
